Present Continuous Tense – Form, Structure & Rules

What Is the Present Continuous Tense?

The Present Continuous tense is used to describe:

• actions happening now
• temporary actions happening around now
• future arrangements

Examples:

I am studying English.
She is working today.
They are watching a movie.

The tense helps us describe actions that are in progress.

Present Continuous Questions

To form questions in the Present Continuous tense, we change the word order.

Instead of:

Subject + verb

we start with the verb to be.

Structure:

 am / is / are + subject + verb-ing

This structure is extremely common in daily English conversations.

Yes / No Questions in Present Continuous

Many Present Continuous questions are Yes / No questions.

No, she isn’t.

Are they watching the movie?
Yes, they are.

This is one of the most common question patterns in English.

WH-Questions in Present Continuous

We can also ask information questions using question words.

Examples:

What are you doing?
Where are they going?
Why is she laughing?

Structure:

Question word + am / is / are + subject + verb-ing

Example:

What are you studying?

These questions help us ask for more detailed information.
